I was always happier

to be in the background,

I was always careful

never to make a sound.

I never wanted to be

noticed or singled out

I always made sure I wasn’t

the one who would shout.

I always felt

I was insignificant,

I always knew

I was far from omnipotent.

I never had any

self-belief or self-worth

I always ran away

in case I got hurt.

Now it’s too late

to change who I am

because no one could care less

or give a damn.
