The funeral bell tolls as the
coffin is carried from the church.
Birds fly skywards,
shaken from their perch.
Black umbrellas are raised
to protect the mourners from the rain,
whose very faces are etched
with sadness and pain.
Condolences are offered
and then hands are shook,
while inquisitive bystanders
try and get a closer look.
The hearseโs engine turns
and a low murmur is heard
then the cortege sets off
without as much as a word.
Heads bowed as they accompany
him on his final journey,
silently praying that his
soul will be granted mercy.
