National Holiday

Running through

the streets and

laughing out loud,

a childish exuberance

amongst the crowd.

A national holiday

being celebrated

with houses and

shops all decorated.

A memory from

my childhood that can

make me smile,

a time when innocence

could still beguile.

Bunting hanging

from telegraph poles,

everyone dressed in their

Sunday best clothes.

Fire trucks and

marching bands

including some

that had travelled

from foreign lands.

The annual parade

for the national saint,

the one day of the year

without complaints.
