The Funeral Bell

The funeral bell tolls as the

coffin is carried from the church.

Birds fly skywards,

disturbed from their perch.

Black umbrellas are raised

to protect the mourners from the rain,

whose very faces are etched

with sadness and pain.

Condolences are offered

and then hands are shook,

while inquisitive bystanders

try and get a closer look.

The hearse’s engine turns

and a low murmur is heard

then the cortege sets off

without as much as a word.

Heads bowed as they accompany

him on his final journey,

silently praying that his

soul will be granted mercy.
