Deep of the Night

You are lost in the

deepest part of the night

where no one’s around

and the slightest noise

brings fright.

Not a star in the sky

the whole world’s black,

You are blind and defenceless

from any attack.

Alone you freeze like

a statue on its plinth

as you try to figure out

how to escape this labyrinth.

Listening for any sound

you hold your breath

afraid that in the darkness

awaits your death.

Perspiration on your brow

you make your move

as a voice in your head

asks what this will prove.

Running through the graves

with panic in your chest

you try not to disturb those

below who are at rest.

Every night you try to

choose the correct route

that will help facilitate

your break out,

but you always end up

back at the beginning

amongst all the dead

who now stand grinning.

You can never wake up

from this nightmare

a familiar battle in your

psychological warfare
