April Showers

Walking through a graveyard

and I am being followed

by three black crows.

They move from headstone

to headstone and when I stop

they line up in a row.

They never take their eyes

off me as I arrange some flowers,

not even when it starts to rain

another one of April’s showers.

I know that crows in a graveyard

are regarded as standard fare,

but something about these

birds is calling out beware.

Are they a warning of

some unforeseen event,

a sign from heaven that

a loved one has sent.

Or is it all in my mind,

another fanciful illusion

that I’ve just created

to add to my confusion.
