A Friend

What would it be like

to be your own friend.

One who is there for you

and doesn’t condescend.

A friend that looks back

from the mirror with a smile

to let you know that

what you do is worthwhile.

A friend that doesn’t desert

you when times get tough

and is there to lift you up

when you are feeling rough.

Instead you are stuck with

a friend that can’t stand you,

who is always more than ready

to laugh and criticise on cue.

No matter what you

may try to achieve,

he’s there waiting with

an obstacle up its sleeve.

to make sure you don’t

rise above your station

and are unable to fulfill

any of your aspirations.
