Cheap Alcohol

An empty fridge

stares back at you,

no beer left

to console you.

Your bed is calling

but you can’t hear,

you need some more

to ease your fear.

A bottle of whiskey

grabs your attention,

maybe this can

be your salvation.

You open the bottle

and pour out a measure,

offer up a toast

to the life you don’t treasure.

You’ve lost count

of the chances you wasted

along with all

the cheap alcohol you’ve tasted.

You dread to think

what tomorrow may bring,

you’re not even sure

if it’s summer or spring.

Life has passed you

in the blink of an eye

and you have been left

alone here to die.

  1. Dear Poet, I translated your poem in Italian and will present it in my weekly column dedicated to the poets of the web: Gioielli Rubati, next 20 January. Thank you my friend.

    Un frigo vuoto ti guarda,
non è rimasta birra per consolarti.

    Il letto ti sta chiamando
    ma non puoi sentire,
    ne hai bisogno ancora
    per alleviare la paura.

    Una bottiglia di whisky
    attira la tua attenzione,
    forse questo può offriti sollievo.

    L’apri, ne versi una misura,
    offri un brindisi
alla vita di cui non fai tesoro.

    Hai perso il conto
    delle possibilità che hai sprecato
    insieme a tutto l’alcool a buon prezzo
    che hai assaggiato.

    Hai paura di pensare
    cosa può portare il domani,
    non sei nemmeno sicuro
    se è estate o primavera.

    La vita ti ha superato
    in un batter d’occhio
e tu sei stato lasciato solo
    qui, a morire.

  2. Where is the “sad” button when you need it? This makes me want to reach out in love and friendship. Of course, it’s not true, is it? It’s just the poet in you reaching out vicariously to others, right?
