Mars

Twisting, turning,
sleep will not arrive.
Wide awake
you decide to go for a drive.
Get in to the car
and head out in to the night.
Street lights are on
but no one is in sight.
Drive to the
mountains
where it is dark.
Find the clearing
with the view
then carefully park.
Look down on
your town
in its eerie glow.
Wonder how long
before winters first snow.
Leave the engine run
to generate some heat.
You pull a leaver
to lower your seat.
Lying back
you look at the stars,
and for a second
you think you see Mars.
Four nights now
you have parked here.
Ever since
you found out
she was going to leave.
